Independent Researcher Finds Exoplanet Using AI Code Tools
Source: MTS
An individual scientist using Claude Code identified a planetary candidate in public TESS datasets that professional astronomers had missed—a concrete example of AI reducing expertise gatekeeping in observational science. This matters because frontier discovery work no longer requires institutional resources or specialized training. The bottleneck has shifted from data and compute access to curiosity and skill at prompting an AI system. If this pattern repeats across domains, scientific credibility may redistribute away from credential-bound institutions toward whoever can best orchestrate machine intelligence to attack unsolved problems.
