GPU compute exchanges struggle against hyperscaler opacity
Source: Semafor
Exchange operators want to create a liquid market for AI compute similar to oil futures, but the infrastructure for price discovery is broken. Hyperscalers like OpenAI and Meta control the bulk of demand yet transact in opaque bilateral deals, leaving only fragmented data from smaller cloud providers like Lambda Labs. Without transparent benchmarks, buyers lack leverage to arbitrage between providers, and startups can't easily undercut on price. This locks in the hyperscalers' margin advantage while tokenizing compute remains stuck as a theoretical market rather than a functioning one.
