Apple Reverses Privacy Stance to Train Siri on User Data

Apple is now explicitly asking users to opt-in to having their data used for AI training—a reversal of its long-standing "we don't train on your data" positioning that helped differentiate the company from rivals like Google and Meta. The shift exposes the economics of competitive AI development: even Apple's scale and resources require access to real user interactions to build competitive foundation models. The company is willing to trade its privacy-first brand positioning for training data. Opt-in consent now functions as adequate legal and PR cover for data usage that would have been unthinkable in Apple's privacy narrative years ago.
