DIY Microprocessor Design Enters the Hobbyist Era
Source: Hackaday
Tiny Tapeout and similar services have crossed a threshold where individual makers can now fabricate custom silicon for under $100, collapsing what was once a multi-million-dollar barrier to chip design. This doesn't produce competitive processors, but it expands who iterates on hardware: a researcher testing a novel instruction set or an artist embedding computation into a sculpture can now do so without corporate backing or institutional resources. The shift mirrors open-source software's democratization effect. Expect an explosion of niche, single-purpose chips that wouldn't justify traditional fab tooling but represent genuine innovation at the margins.
