Europe's Sovereign Tech Ambitions Hit the Scaling Wall
Source: Featured Blogs - Forrester
European governments are discovering that building sovereign alternatives to U.S. tech platforms (like Matrix for communications) is technically possible but commercially impossible at continental scale. The Malmö deployments work as proof-of-concept, but lack the network effects, developer ecosystem, and unit economics to compete with entrenched players. The constraint isn't engineering; it's that sovereign tech requires mandated adoption across fragmented regulatory zones and competing national interests—a political coordination problem that even well-funded initiatives like Gaia-X have repeatedly failed to solve. Without either monopolistic lock-in (like China's Great Firewall) or genuine technical superiority in a high-value use case, European sovereign platforms remain expensive prestige projects rather than sustainable alternatives.
