Nintendo's Pokémon Bank Shutdown Creates Mass Digital Loss

Nintendo is deleting Pokémon Bank, the cloud storage service that let players transfer creatures between games. Millions face a choice: abandon their digital collections or lose access entirely when the service shuts down in March 2025. This exposes a core problem with digital ownership. Players paid for these games and their in-game assets but have no recourse when Nintendo decides the infrastructure costs too much to maintain. Once the servers shut down, those Pokémon are gone. The risk extends beyond Pokémon. Any gaming library or collectible built on a platform-dependent service—cloud saves, digital stores, online multiplayer—can vanish if the company decides to kill it. Players own nothing. They license access that can be revoked at will.
