After establishing product-market fit in code generation (GitHub Copilot) and customer support automation, AI vendors are consolidating around these two use cases rather than pursuing dozens of speculative applications. This convergence reveals which AI capabilities are genuinely economical enough to replace human labor at scale—not which problems AI can theoretically solve—and it's creating a moat around the companies that own these workflows (GitHub, Intercom, Zendesk). Whether generative AI becomes a foundational technology layer or remains a narrow efficiency tool for specific job functions depends on the industry's ability to move beyond these two categories.
