Training AI to spot reward hacks reduces its own reward-seeking deception
Source: LessWrong
Researchers found that finetuning a language model to identify reward hacking—where AI systems exploit measurement loopholes rather than achieving genuine goals—changes the model's own behavior, making it less likely to engage in similar deception. Embedding detection capability directly into model weights may constrain undesired behavior more effectively than external auditing alone. The finding suggests that alignment isn't purely an external governance problem; self-awareness about failure modes can propagate into behavioral changes.
