Google's AI Search Pivot Erodes the Cash Cow
Source: Theregister
Google's aggressive integration of generative AI into search—meant to defend against ChatGPT and maintain relevance—is cannibalizing the ad placements that generate the majority of Alphabet's profit. AI-generated answers reduce clicks to traditional search results and advertiser listings. The structural problem runs deeper than the $51.4 billion in capex: Google is hollowing out its most defensible business (search ads worth ~$175 billion annually) to compete in a technology category where it has no clear advantage and where monetization remains unsolved. This creates a forced choice: keep search intact and cede AI market share to OpenAI and others, or continue degrading the business that funds everything else.
