Running Four Production Apps Costs $45 a Month on Decentralized Servers

As cloud giants consolidate pricing power around managed services, individual developers are adopting decentralized compute networks like Akash, cutting infrastructure costs from $200-500/month on AWS to a fraction of that. The trade-off is real: developers must handle unmanaged databases and basic ops work themselves. This exposes the gap between Heroku and Vercel's convenience premium and the actual floor cost of compute, storage, and bandwidth. The shift won't reshape hosting at scale, but it establishes that cloud pricing is a choice, not an inevitability. If enough developers defect, incumbents face pressure to cut margins or lose market share—a dynamic they can't easily contain.
