Gen Z First-Time Voters Prioritize Economics Over Culture Wars

Democrats' 40-point lead with under-30 voters in 2026 battleground states is up sharply from a 4-point margin in 2024, but the swing reflects bread-and-butter concerns—cost of living, war anxiety, establishment rejection—not cultural realignment. This cohort, shaped by Trump's first term, the pandemic at a formative age, and sustained economic pressure, responds to material conditions rather than ideology. Their allegiance remains contingent on whether either party can credibly address inflation and opportunity. The youth vote's volatility exposes a strategic error: Gen Z votes tactically on whose policies might improve their economic reality, not tribal affiliation.
