Despite years of advancement in detection methods, researchers lack consistent tools to identify AI authorship in literary fiction—a gap that matters as publishers face real decisions about disclosure and authenticity. Generative models produce text variably enough that statistical signatures don't hold across different prompts, authors, or genres, making any detection claim vulnerable to false positives and adversarial counter-measures. This uncertainty is shifting the burden from detection to other mechanisms: metadata verification, blockchain timestamps, and publisher attestation are becoming more valuable than any algorithm that claims to spot synthetic prose.
