SpaceX rents Colossus data center to Anthropic after Grok latency failures

SpaceX's decision to monetize underutilized infrastructure exposes a real constraint on AI development at scale. Elon Musk's own teams couldn't overcome latency issues with Colossus 1 for Grok training, making the facility more valuable as rental income than internal use. Proprietary data center design doesn't automatically solve compute problems; geography, networking topology, and architecture matter as much as raw capacity. Well-capitalized AI labs will outsource compute to whoever solves the latency problem best, shifting competition from ownership toward operational excellence.
